Faint of Heart is meant to be blared when you’re driving with the windows down. These are definitely the highlights of Love You to Death. Tegan and Sara will have to push harder in a new direction if they are to achieve the level of artistry they seem eager to achieve, but as a dance pop record, Love You to Death touch all the bases and delivers on the energy that fueled their last effort, Hearththrob. My three favorites happen to be the first three songs I added to my June Jams playlist: Faint of Heart, Dying to Know and BWU. Too often, as in “White Knuckles,” this approach falls into clichés about “crying wolf” or how I’m here for you and willing to “Hang On to the Night,” but with the ballad “100x,” come up with something more personal, more expressive and relevant. You can expect some to love “Boyfriend” simply because it’s outspoken in declaration of lesbian desire and refusal to be “your secret anymore,” but “BWU” is no less provocative in it’s suggestion of an open relationship in the line, “save your first and last dance for me, I don’t need a white wedding.” If you like your pop with a bit more bite to it, then Tegan and Sara are everything you’re looking for. My three favorites happen to be the first three songs I added to my June Jams playlist: Faint of Heart, Dying to Know and BWU. Given the success of Chvrches and a host of other sound-a-likes, it’s not hard to imagine why they’ve chosen to lock in on what worked best last time, than risk changing up the formula to produce something completely new.Īlthough this rather predictable approach to music, relying so heavily on synthesizers and canned drums, can get lost easily and slide into an artless, generic redundancy, Tegan and Sara are at the best here, stretching the lyrical boundaries to make something more personal and unique instead of falling back on time-worn pop love song clichés. But repeat listens reveal that there are even better cuts, particularly ‘U-Turn’, a disco-synth number that perfects the sad-lyrics-to-a-happy-song formula. The middle-of-the-road songs that skirt between the extremes ("Dying to Know," "White Knuckles") fail to leave as strong an impression, and the record does play a bit like a return trip through familiar terrain, but for the most part, Love You to Death finds Tegan and Sara offering another solid soundtrack for summer romances and road-trips alike.Fans who loved the musical evolution that took folk/rock twin-sister act Tegan and Sara into synth-pop territory for 2013’s Greg Kurstin produced Heartthrob, will find plenty to appreciate on this reboot. The album's best hooks hit with dizzying force, from the "whoa-ohs" of the deliriously catchy "Stop Desire" to the pulsing keyboard riff that drives the aforementioned "U-Turn." And when Love You to Death slams on the brakes, as on the regretful piano ballad "100X," it offers a welcome change of pace that was somewhat absent from its predecessor. It was Tegan & Sara‘s last album, Heartthrob, that saw them suddenly metamorphose from slightly earnest indie-folk duo who hung out with the likes of Death Cab For Cutie and Weezer to fully-fledged merchants of massive pop bangers. Rather than taking another route - or, to borrow a song title, making a "U-Turn" - the sisters' follow-up record, Love You to Death, aims for the same stretch of road with an extra dose of pep in the tank.
